Discover Iconic Destinations on the Virgin Voyages French Daze and Ibiza Nights Cruise

Looking for a mix of culture, adventure, and pure relaxation? Virgin Voyages’ French Daze and Ibiza Nights Mediterranean Cruise itinerary offers all that and more. Imagine sailing the Mediterranean in style, stopping in Marseille, Cannes, Palma de Mallorca, Ibiza, and Barcelona. Each destination brings something special, from vibrant street art to serene beaches. This is more than a trip—it’s a chance to dive deep into iconic landmarks, seaside adventures, and unforgettable nightlife.

If you’re new to cruising with Virgin Voyages, make sure to check out my earlier post, where I share tips on making the most of the ship’s incredible amenities and onboard experiences.

Marseille: A Hidden Gem of Culture and Charm

Stepping off the ship in Marseille feels like entering a world where history and modern art blend effortlessly. The port’s a quick ride from the city center but worth the short trip. Once you arrive, the energy hits you—narrow streets filled with hidden gems, street art popping up around every corner, and cozy cafés beckoning you to pause and people-watch.

Art enthusiasts will love spotting the local murals, each one with a story to tell. Keep your eyes peeled for quirky characters tucked into the designs.

For those looking to explore beyond the city, there are plenty of optional shore excursions to choose from:

Calanques National Park: Just 30 minutes away, this natural park offers stunning limestone cliffs and turquoise waters. Hike the scenic trails or take a boat tour for a unique view of the dramatic coastline.

Aix-en-Provence: Immerse yourself in French countryside charm with a trip to nearby Aix-en-Provence. Explore its historic squares, lavender fields, and bustling markets. This laid-back town is perfect for a leisurely stroll and some shopping.

Château d'If: Fans of The Count of Monte Cristo will love visiting this iconic fortress, located on a small island off Marseille’s coast. Take a boat ride to the château and dive into its rich history while enjoying panoramic views of the sea.

Wine Tasting in Provence: Head out on a wine tour in the Provence region, known for its world-class rosé. Visit local vineyards, learn about the winemaking process, and savor some of the region’s best wines.

These excursions offer a mix of nature, history, and culture—ensuring there’s something for every traveler.

Cannes: Glitz, Culture, and Stunning Views

Our day in Cannes began with a bit of adventure. We walked up to Église Notre-Dame d'Espérance, a hilltop church that offers sweeping views of the city below. The iconic Cannes sign, the sun reflecting off the Mediterranean—it was a photographer's dream.

After taking in the stunning views, we couldn’t resist the pull of a nearby Boulangerie/Pâtisserie. We sat down to enjoy rich, indulgent éclairs from Le Saint Antoine, perfectly paired with a smooth espresso. It was the ideal way to relax and soak in the charming atmosphere of Cannes before we ventured back out to explore more of the city.

Next, we wandered through the streets and discovered Les Murs Peints, the massive murals depicting classic movie cars and iconic scenes. It’s a fun, cinematic way to explore the city.

Near the end of our day, we made our way to the Palace of Festivals and Congresses of Cannes. This is the spot where the famous Cannes Film Festival takes place, but the experience fell a little flat. At the top of the stairs were cardboard cutouts of stars, and there was even a line to take a picture with them. We skipped the line, but still enjoyed a quick stroll through the miniature walk of fame, where we found Julie Andrews’ handprints—a definite highlight.

Tip: If you’d prefer to see the city without as much walking, the little white train is a great option. It takes you past all the major sights, letting you relax while enjoying the beauty of Cannes.

Important Tip: Cannes is a tender port, so you'll need to take a smaller boat from the ship to shore. Book your tender time early for an early spot. After noon, no reservations are needed, and you can hop on a tender at your convenience.

If you're visiting Cannes, there are plenty of shore excursions to choose from:

Day Trip to St. Paul de Vence: Explore the charming medieval town of St. Paul de Vence, known for its art galleries, cobblestone streets, and incredible views of the countryside.

Wine Tasting in Provence: Discover the flavors of Provence with a guided wine tasting tour. Visit local vineyards and sample some of the region’s finest wines.

Island of Sainte-Marguerite: Just a short ferry ride from Cannes, this peaceful island offers beautiful beaches and the historic Fort Royal, where the mysterious Man in the Iron Mask was imprisoned.

Palma de Mallorca: Adventure Meets Relaxation

Palma de Mallorca offers the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. The historic streets are filled with charming architecture, but if you’re craving something more thrilling, there are plenty of outdoor activities to choose from.

We opted for canyoneering, navigating narrow gorges, scrambling over rocks, and rappelling down cliffs. Every turn revealed another breathtaking view of the Mediterranean, making the experience as thrilling as it was beautiful. To top it off, our adventure ended with a leap into the sea—a refreshing finish after a day of adrenaline. Afterward, we wandered through the charming streets of Palma, soaking in the relaxed island vibe.

If you’re looking for something a bit less intense or simply want to explore more of what this vibrant island has to offer, here are a few other great shore excursion options:

Explore Palma’s Old Town: Wander through the narrow streets of Palma’s Old Town, filled with centuries-old architecture, Gothic churches, and bustling squares. A visit to the iconic La Seu Cathedral is a must—its towering spires and stunning views over the harbor are unforgettable. You can also visit the nearby Palau de l'Almudaina, a royal palace with impressive Moorish architecture.

Beach Day at Cala Major: If relaxing on the beach is more your style, grab a taxi from the city center and head to Cala Major, just a short ride away. The golden sand and clear waters make it a perfect spot to unwind. You can rent beach chairs and umbrellas, and there are plenty of nearby restaurants where you can grab a seaside lunch before heading back.

Biking Through the Countryside: Take a guided bike tour through Mallorca’s scenic countryside, passing by vineyards, olive groves, and charming villages. It’s a great way to experience the island’s natural beauty at a slower pace while enjoying some fresh air and exercise.

Wine and Tapas Tour: Get a taste of Mallorca’s food and wine culture with a guided wine and tapas tour. Visit local wineries, sample the island’s famous wines, and indulge in traditional tapas dishes at authentic restaurants.

Whether you’re seeking an adrenaline rush or simply want to take it easy, Palma de Mallorca offers something for every traveler. The blend of historic charm, beautiful beaches, and outdoor activities makes it a versatile stop on your itinerary.

Ibiza: Legendary Nightlife and Hidden Daytime Escapes

Ibiza lives up to its reputation as a party paradise, but there’s so much more to discover beyond the nightlife. We spent the night dancing under the stars, and as the sun came up, the harbor restaurants were still buzzing with energy. Watching the sunrise over cocktails after a night of dancing? Unbeatable.

Tip: While Ibiza’s nightlife is legendary, it’s important to be mindful of your surroundings, especially late at night. Stick to well-lit areas, stay with your group, and avoid isolated spots. Keep an eye on your belongings and be cautious when accepting drinks from strangers.

For our daytime adventure, we rented a scooter and explored the island at our own pace. Note: If you plan to rent a vehicle in Spain, including scooters, you’ll need an international driver’s license, so be sure to arrange that before your trip! Also, always wear a helmet, and make sure you're familiar with local traffic rules.

Our first stop was Torre des Savinar, one of Ibiza’s iconic towers, where we hiked up for breathtaking panoramic views of the coastline and sea. From there, we rode to Cala d'Hort, a peaceful beach with stunning views of the island of Es Vedrà. After some time soaking in the tranquility, we enjoyed a delicious seafood lunch at Restaurant El Carmen, with the waves lapping just below us.

Tip: Ibiza is also known for its vibrant Boho vintage markets, where you can find everything from handmade jewelry to retro clothing. These markets are scattered across the island and offer a glimpse into Ibiza’s laid-back, artistic vibe—perfect for picking up a unique souvenir.

If you’re looking for other ways to explore the island, here are a few exciting shore excursion options:

Beach Hopping: Visit some of Ibiza’s most beautiful beaches, including Cala Comte and Cala Bassa, known for their crystal-clear waters and soft sand. Spend the day soaking up the sun, swimming, and enjoying the relaxed beach atmosphere.

Dalt Vila Walking Tour: Explore the history of Ibiza Town’s old quarter, Dalt Vila, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Wander through the cobblestone streets, visit historic landmarks, and take in panoramic views of the island.

Formentera Day Trip: Take a boat trip to the nearby island of Formentera, Ibiza’s quieter, less-visited sister. Known for its stunning beaches and turquoise waters, Formentera is the perfect escape for a peaceful day in nature.

Whether you’re exploring Ibiza’s legendary beaches, shopping for one-of-a-kind finds, or diving into its rich history, there’s so much more to this island than its nightlife.

Puerto de Garraf

After disembarking from the cruise, we took a short train ride to the picturesque village of Puerto de Garraf for a relaxing two-night stay. Nestled along the coastline, Garraf is a hidden gem, offering a peaceful escape from the bustling cities. We had planned a fishing charter during our time there, but the weather had other plans, and our fishing trip was canceled.

LGBT+ street in Stiges spain

The change in plans gave us the perfect opportunity to explore the charming nearby town of Sitges. Known for its vibrant LGBTQ+ scene, Sitges is incredibly welcoming and boasts a lively, inclusive atmosphere. We spent the day exploring the town’s stunning architecture, including the beautiful Església de Sant Bartomeu i Santa Tecla, perched above the beach with breathtaking views of the sea. We also visited the impressive Palau de Maricel, a cultural gem with its unique blend of Gothic and Renaissance styles.

Sitges’ mix of culture, history, and relaxed vibes made it a memorable stop during our stay in the area.

Barcelona

After returning to Barcelona by train, we checked into Casa Mathilda, a charming boutique hotel located in an old building with an antique, fully functioning elevator. The staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating, making us feel right at home from the moment we arrived.

With the afternoon ahead of us, we set out to visit La Sagrada Família, Gaudí’s masterpiece. The towering spires and vibrant stained glass created an awe-inspiring atmosphere. Did you know Gaudí’s masterpiece is still under construction more than 140 years later? Walking through the ongoing work gives a sense of stepping into a living piece of history. From there, we wandered through the streets, admiring several of Gaudí’s other architectural wonders, including Casa Batlló and Casa Milà (La Pedrera). Each building showcased Gaudí’s unique style and creativity, making for a memorable day of architectural exploration.

The next day, we took the Telefèric de Montjuïc to the top of Montjuïc Hill, where we began by exploring Montjuïc Castle. The castle’s rich history and its panoramic views of Barcelona and the sea made it a must-see. We continued through Montjuïc Park, enjoying the peaceful green spaces, and made a stop at the Olympic Village, which still holds the energy and history of the 1992 Summer Olympics. As we made our way down the hill, we visited the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, home to an impressive collection of Catalan art and offering stunning views of the city.

Afterward, we made a quick stop at Las Arenas, a former bullring turned shopping center, where we headed up to the rooftop for panoramic views of the city. We enjoyed a relaxing break with tapas, local beer, and a refreshing caprioska at 11 Nudos Barcelona, which had a lovely outdoor seating area perfect for soaking in the Barcelona vibe. From there, we took a leisurely walk back to Casa Mathilda, taking in the vibrant street art and soaking up the unique atmosphere of the city along the way.

Feeling recharged, we then headed out to the La Rambla area. Tip: While La Rambla is a vibrant and lively part of Barcelona, it’s also a known hotspot for pickpockets, so it’s important to keep a close eye on your belongings and stay aware of your surroundings.

Our evening ended on a high note with an authentic Flamenco show at Tablao Flamenco Cordobes. The intensity of the dancers, combined with the rhythmic guitar, made for a passionate and unforgettable performance—a true immersion into Spanish culture.
